The Jarawa Tribe Reserve Protocol

The route from Port Blair to the entry point of Baratang passes directly through the Jarawa Tribe Reserve (between Jirkatang and the Middle Strait). The government strictly manages traffic through this zone to protect the indigenous population from outside diseases and disruptions.

Strict Legal Regulations: Spotting members of the Jarawa tribe along the roadside is an incidental occurrence, not a tourist sightseeing activity. It is an absolute, punishable offense under the Indian Penal Code to interact with them, offer them food, or take photos and videos. Keep your car windows rolled up and your cameras put away throughout this stretch.

The Transit Convoys

Vehicles are only permitted to pass through the tribal reserve in structured government-regulated convoys.

• Schedule: Convoys typically depart from the Jirkatang checkpoint at 6:00 AM, 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 3:00 PM.

• Recommendation: It is highly recommended to aim for the 6:00 AM or 9:00 AM convoys. To catch the earliest slot, travelers usually leave Port Blair between 3:00 AM and 3:30 AM.

• Total Drive Time: Expect roughly 3 to 5 hours of travel time each way, making for a total of around 6 hours on the road. It is best to schedule an overnight stay in Port Blair both the night before and the night after your day trip.

Top Attractions to See in Baratang

Upon reaching the Middle Strait, a vehicle ferry transports passengers and transport units smoothly across the water to the Nilambur Jetty on Baratang Island. From here, you can split your day exploring several distinct natural wonders:

1. The Nayadera Limestone Caves

A major highlight of the island involves boarding a speed boat from Nilambur Jetty, weaving through breathtaking mangrove-covered canals. After arriving at a wooden jetty, a 1.2-kilometer trek leads you directly to magnificent underground limestone formations. Inside, you will see massive stalactites and stalagmites hanging down like natural crystal chandeliers, sculpted by centuries of dripping, mineral-rich water.

2. The Mud Volcanoes

Located 9 kilometers from the Nilambur port, Baludera is a curved, quiet getaway completely isolated from commercial crowds.
